Toyota Camry 3VZ 3.0 engine

Toyota Camry is a mid-size sedan released in Japan in 1982. With over 20 million units sold it is also the best selling car of its type. Since then Toyota has launched more generations of Camrys under different names including Avalon, Ipsum and Lexus ES 300.

The 3VZ engine was released with the third generation of Camry models in 1988. The new engine was designed to be lighter but had more power output than the previous 2M model while maintaining superior fuel economy ratings.

3VZ 3.0 liter V6 engine has an aluminium alloy block and heads for durability and low weight while being easier to cool due to increased space around cylinders bores allowing greater airflow through for cooling purposes. The Japanese market engines were SOHC (Single Overhead Cam) and produced 150 hp at 4600 rpm and 185 ft-lbs of torque at 3200 rpm.

American market V6s were DOHC (Double Overhead Cam) and made 190 hp at 4800 rpm and 200 ft-lbs of torque at 3600 rpm.

The 3VZ-FE was introduced as a replacement for the 3VZ-E, which still powered base model Camrys until 1994 when it received the 4VZ engine that came with all new models launched in 1995. The 3VZ is still used today as the main powertrain for Lexus ES300 as well as other Toyota products such as T100 truck, Avalon XLS and Spacia in Japan.

Common problems for this engine include overheating, valve cover gasket leaks and oil consumption – due to worn out piston rings allowing gases to escape through the oil into the vacuum in the intake manifold. Replacement of camshaft drive belts is also a common task that must be done at recommended mileage intervals or when they fail.

The original parts are only available from Toyota dealerships who usually charge high prices due to it being a specialty part. The replacement market offers aftermarket alternatives at lower cost as well as better quality than their factory equivalents providing better durability as well as increased power if aimed at modified engines designed for racing applications. Engine Finder can help you find used Toyota engines for sale throughout South Africa.
