About the Ford Fiesta

About The Ford Fiesta Model

The Ford Fiesta is a passenger car of the segment B developed by the subsidiary European of the US company Ford Motor Company, and manufactured in Germany, Chile, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, China , India and South Africa. Since its appearance in 1976 there have been six different generations of the Fiesta and more than twelve million units have been sold. 2 Within the Ford range, it has been placed above the Ford Ka and below the Ford Escort and Ford Focus . The Fiesta is the only passenger car in Ford’s European range to retain the name of the original 1976 model, unchanged.

The model is sold worldwide. In the United States and Canada it was only available between 1978 and 1980, but in 2010 it returned to these markets by importing units manufactured at the Cuautitlán ( Mexico ) plant.

History

In the early 1970s, European demand for small cars increased. Ford’s main competitors had already launched cars such as the Fiat 127 and later the Audi 50 and the Renault 5 . Likewise, the effects of the energy crisis of 1973 affected said demand. Ford needed a small vehicle to compete in this emerging market. Finally, after various designs, a prototype known as “Bobcat” emerged, which would be the basis of the new Ford model, the “Fiesta”.

Among the names proposed for the Bobcat project were Amigo, Bambi, Bebe, Bolero, Bravo, Cherie, Chico, Fiesta, Forito, Metro, Pony, Sierra and Tempo. Although “Bravo” was the name with the highest number of votes, Henry Ford II dismissed them and opted for “Fiesta” (ironically, Amigo, Bravo, Metro and Pony would be used on models from other non-Ford brands, and the Sierra came out later under the oval mark). The name “Fiesta” belonged at the time to General Motors , which gave it free to Ford.

After several years of speculation in the motor press about the new Ford vehicle, it was put up for sale in 1976.

In 1990 and 1991, and from 1996 to 1998, the Ford Fiesta was the best-selling car in the UK . The best year was 1987 with about 154,000 units sold.
