More Info

A prime example of one generation of BMW’s inline six-cylinder turbocharged engines, which went into production in 2009. This engine was designed to replace both the less well-liked N62B40 and the slightly outmoded bestseller N54B30. The N54’s aluminum cylinder block with cast iron liners serves as the engine’s foundation. The engine got new connecting rods, lighter pistons, and a crankshaft. The latter measures 144.35 mm in length.   The 3rd generation Valvetronic system, whose purpose is to control the valve lift height, was installed in addition to the cylinder head modification and valve timing system improvement made by the engineers. The diameter of the employed intake and exhaust devices is 32 and 28 mm, respectively. The valve lift is 9.9 mm for the intake phase and 9.7 mm for the exhaust phase, respectively, with a phase angle of 255 degrees for each. A revision of the intake and exhaust systems has been made. It was chosen to employ one Twin Scroll turbocharger instead of two, which has the benefit of providing a consistent shelf of torque beginning at 1200 rpm. The standard version’s boost pressure indication is 0.65 bars. The Bosch MEVD17.2 system is in charge of managing the engine. The motor is designed to be installed in BMW vehicles with the 35i and 40i indices. The S55 transmission was developed for the M4 and M5 sports vehicles, and it was based on this technology.

Flaws

The following are the most notable drawbacks that owners of vehicles with a N55 engine experience:

  • increased use of oil. The ventilation valve for gases created in the crankcase cavity is most often to blame for excessive lubricant use.
  • Misfires. Typically brought by by excessive hydraulic lifter coking. By utilizing only premium oil, the issue may be prevented.
  • jolts from a motor. The most common causes of this issue are worn nozzles, which should be replaced every 80–100,000 kilometers.

Monitoring the condition of the fuel pump is also essential since it will only function properly and last a long time with high-quality gasoline and lubricants. Since it combines great power, good dependability, and operational stability, this engine type has generally shown itself to be favorable. Additionally, the manufacturer set aside a considerable margin, enabling tuning aficionados to customize the installation to their preferences.

Modifications

This engine comes in a variety of forms, including the following: The N55B30M0 has a basic output of 306 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque between 1200 and 5000 rpm. affixed to the BMW 35i. manufactured since 2009. N55 – a modification with 320 horsepower and a torque cap of 450 Nm. Cars with the 35i and 40i index have it fitted. Updated firmware for electronics control is included, as well as a more sophisticated cooling system. manufactured since 2010. An analog of the N55, the N55B30O0 has the same torque indications with a little greater power (326 hp). centered on the 35i BMW. manufactured since 2011. Model N55HP, which produces 340 horsepower and either 450 or 500 Nm of torque (in the Overboost series). On computers with the 35i modification, it is installed. Manufactured since 2011. The N55B30T0 is a 360 horsepower engine that produces a staggering 465 Nm of torque between 1350 and 5250 rpm. It has been fitted to the BMW 40i from 2015 and produces 370 horsepower with a torque indication of 365 Nm (or 500 in the Overboost version). This engine has been paired with the BMW M2 since 2015.

Chip tuning

This power supply is excellent for chip tweaking, much as the N54. It can be modified to produce more than 360 horsepower using mostly downpipes and JB4 Stage 2 firmware, which are rather straightforward procedures. Installing a cold intake will enable you to quickly surpass the 380 horsepower level, which will result in a quarter-mile pace of roughly 12 seconds, which is 1.5 seconds quicker than the factory time.
